To Wax or Not to wax...And We're Not Talking Floors

Ladies....well, and qualified gentlemen, I have a question.  Should I wax pertinent areas before heading to Hawaii?  Please keep in mind that having my eyebrows done with thread brought tears to my eyes.  Anyhoo, I hate shaving, but I think every day in Hawaii is bathing suit day, and I don't want to have to deal with it.  What are your thoughts?  Underarms? Bikini? Legs? All of the above? None of the above?  I don't even know how much this costs, recovery time, how long it lasts, etc.  Basically I am an uneducated soul and could use your advice.

I'll go ahead and say thank you in advance....oh, and I'll probably end up blogging about it if I get it done.

  1. Don't even try to do it yourself. I had to get one and a half legs done after trying it at home.

I say try it. You'll need some lead time, because hair needs to be longer than a quarter inch.

Take two pain relievers about 20 minutes before your appointment. Make sure they don't double dip into the wax. It's not got enough to kill viruses like herpes.

Good luck! The things we do. You husband should get his back waxed in support.

  2. That should read "hot". Stupid autocorrect.

  3. In my (albeit limited) experience, a bikini wax is essential to surviving swimsuit season with confidence. I have a high threshold for pain though. And I had a kickass wax woman. (I know there's an official title, but dang if I can remember it. Sorry, Wonderful Wax Woman!) Think calming spa-like experience and not the scene from 40-Year-Old-Virgin. It might be worth the pain to go forth with confidence in Hawaii and not worry about stray hairs marring the view. :)

  4. I do the full Brazilian and the back of the legs that i can't reach shaving. Yes, it hurts like a bad word. There is a gel that you can get at walmart called Bikini Zone that it kinda like orajel for your bikini area. It numbs it. It will sting for about an hour, then you'll be fine... and Ryan, might er.. enjoy it :)

  5. Thanks, all--this has been very informative thus far. Any thoughts on price? How to tell if a spa is reputable? Good ones in the Marietta area? I was thinking about Sandra Gane just around the corner.

  6. Yeah, sure. Go ahead, be the test case, then come back and report to the rest of us chickens. Bach...bach-bach!

I can't help you with price, location, or anything that's truly useful. I can, however, offer up my most sincere prayers for you and your experience. After one bad experience with wax, I think I'll just stick to the inconvenient and tedious razor. :)

  8. http://waxingatlanta.com/ Best decision for Hawaii last year. I could run a small country in the time I spend dealing with hair removal. Use a good place and you'll be glad you did it. I went cheap once and it was a nightmare Vincent Price could have narrated.

  9. Oh, boy. This is what I was afraid of. I KNOW I can't do it myself. Too much of a wuss for that! And, yes, I'll take all the prayers I can get!

  10. Thanks, Kim. So want to steer away from any experience that could be narrated by Vincent Price.

  11. So, new stupid question: half leg = $25, so that's $50 for both legs, right? It would appear that waxingatlanta.com is far cheaper than Sandra Gane around the corner, but it would require a drive...

  12. OMyGoodness I so cannot wait to hear about this when you're done.
I don't know about the drive vs. the cost. Seems like the pain you're gonna endure is going to be worth the money and quick trip home for a double maitai.
Or Holla! at me if I can be your designated driver. You can get that head start on the numbing process.

  13. I pay $40 for the playground, and $20 each for the tree stumps.

  14. I say go for it. I like the bikini wax. Had the Brazilian and it just hurt too bad and I had red splotches for several weeks. Have since had the bikini area done several times and it was a totally different experience (much better).

I haven't had my legs or underarms done yet. Definitely let us know (if you do it). Like NotaSupermom said, you need some lead-time and it gets frustrating dealing with that and shorts...

    Good luck to ya!

  15. Good to know, Tami. So I think I may be in a constant state of "lead time." Is there such a thing as too long? (Boy, have I gone TMI with this blog)

  16. I am just wincing at the thought. My solution to such problems is two-piece swimsuits with boy-short bottoms.

And you BETTER blog about it if you get it done.

  17. Where can I find some of those boy short suits--that was my first thought. As to writing about it, I'm the sharing type. I think we've all come to recognize that.

  18. Personal waxing is definitely not something one should undertake by oneself, especially the first time.

As far as the pain, ripping the hair out from the root with hot wax from the most sensitive part of your body just can't be made to feel good.

That said, I would go do it, but only if you have enough time before your trip. You will look like a freshly plucked chicken for about a day and half afterwards. Do no plan any hanky panky the night of or maybe even the next time. You also wouldn't want to be forced to sit on a plane very soon afterwards.

But truthfully waxing gives the very best results. So if you do decide to do it then I have three tips. 1) Trim the hair. Call the waxer and ask how long the hair has to be and cut it to that. It hurts much, much worse if your hair is longer. 2) Hold the skin while the waxer pulls. The tighter you hold your skin the easier and less painful. 3) If she doesn't want you to hold then cross your arms over your chest. Recent studies have shown that crossing your arms tricks your brain and reduces pain perception.

    Good luck!

  19. Ooops. Let me make that clearer. Abstain from hanky panky for a couple of days after the waxing.

  20. Chloe, thanks for all of the practical advice. Thank goodness I have some lead time. As for going it alone, it may be too late to phone a friend since today is D Day. Thank goodness, I came back to check and to see if anyone else had left some practical advice...

  22. I have returned. I feel as though I should collect my thoughts before I put up a post, though...
